Summary
Journey to India’s famous Taj Mahal – a marvellous monument to love and one of the Seven Wonders of the World. Built by a Mughal emperor as a tribute to his late wife, this incredible structure continually astounds visitors with its inspiring architecture and remains one of the world's finest examples of Islamic art. Beginning in Delhi, this three-day trip will take you to Agra, where you can watch the sunrise over the Taj before visiting the sandstone Red Fort and deserted city of Fatehpur Sikri. Returning to Delhi, sample spicy curries and bargain at markets to get a feel for the unforgettable culture, colour and character of India.
Itinerary
Day 1
Delhi - Agra
Namaste! Welcome to India. Make your way to the joining point by 9 am this morning. You’ll then immediately start your tour of Old Delhi with your leader. Drive to the heart of the city, which pulses with the energy and colour of the bazaars. Ride a rickshaw around the back streets to experience the hustle and bustle of everyday life, and visit the amazing Jama Masjid Mosque. After, stop for an optional lunch before departing Delhi at around 2 pm for the drive to Agra. When you arrive, organise tomorrow’s Taj Mahal visit. The rest of the afternoon and evening is free to explore Agra at your own pace.
Day 2
Taj Mahal - Agra
If you choose to view the Taj Mahal at sunrise, you’ll be met at your hotel at about 6 am by your local leader who will accompany you. Alternatively, if you choose for the later 2 pm visit, your leader will meet you at around 8.30 am, so you can visit the Red Fort first. The Taj Mahal is one of the Seven Wonders of the World and a masterpiece of white marble, set among formal gardens. Built by Emperor Shah Jahan as a memorial to his wife Mumtaz, this 'teardrop on the face of eternity' (as it was described by writer Rabindranath Tagore) lives up to all expectations. Then, visit the Agra Fort on the banks of the Yamuna River – constructed in 1565 by Emperor Akbar, the fort was originally designed to be a military structure. It was converted to a palace in Emperor Shah Jahan's time and eventually became his prison after he lost power in 1658. You have a free afternoon to relax or explore the back lanes of Agra, visit the Taj again or watch local artisans and villagers making handicrafts, marble inlay work or carpets. A visit to Sheroes Cafe, which provides employment for women who have been affected by acid attacks, is also highly recommended.
Day 3
Fatehpur Sikri - Delhi
After breakfast, travel by private vehicle towards Delhi, stopping at the deserted Mughal kingdom of Fatehpur Sikri along the way. Built by Emperor Akbar in 1569, it was abandoned after 15 years due to the scarcity of water. A highlight of the settlement is Jama Masjid – a striking mosque featuring elements of both Persian and Hindu design. The main entrance of the mosque is the impressive 54 m-high Buland Darwaza (the Gate of Victory), constructed to commemorate Akbar's military victory in Gujarat. After, your leader will bid you farewell as you begin your journey back to Delhi. You’ll be dropped off at your hotel, at about 3 pm. If you’d like to extend your stay and need additional accommodation, just get in touch with your booking agent ahead of time.

Customer reviews & ratings
This is my first time travelling with Intrepid and I absolutely 100% will be travelling with them again. Everything from start to finish joining instructions, itinerary accommodation, food instructions from 2 Leaders, one in Hanoi. The other in Delhi. Part one of my trip was to join a group in Hanoi and travel down to Ho Chin. We used every conceivable mode of transport trains, planes and automobiles plus a boat plus a bike.. There is something for everyone on an Intrepid trip. If you are a soul traveller like myself but don’t want to be entirely by yourself Intrepid travel is one of the best things you can do. You meet a diverse group of people that end up being friends most of which I will be in contact with.. if you’re on the fence about using Intrepid then jump right off and make your booking now. I can’t wait to choose my next trip.
